Discover Italian Lakes

Posted on Tuesday, 11 January 2011
Discover Italian LakesThe northern lakes of Italy's Lombardy region have gained a certain international notoriety in recent years thanks to Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney. The super star actor has a luxurious villa on the shores of Lake Como and is often spotted about town on his Harley Davidson with a glamourous girlfriend for company. He is regularly visited by superstar friends Brad Pitt and his Jolie-Pitt entourage.

Hence Lake Como is firmly on the tourist trail map, if it is good enough for Hollywood royalty then surely it is good enough for the rest of us mere mortals.

Lake Como may the best known but it does not stand alone in this beautiful region of Northern Italy. Lake Maggiore and Lake Lugano make it a triple act of scenic pleasure. Maggiore is the largest of the three lakes with Lake Como next and Lake Lugano nestled between the two. Lake Como is in the shape of an inverted 'Y' which gives it the largest perimetre of the three lakes, 170km, despite its smaller size.

Lake Como is probably the most well known but Lake Maggiore and Lake Lugano have as much to offer. The lakes were scooped out by glaciers leaving spectacular moutains towering above their depths. The first mention of the lakes appeared in writings from Saint Gregory of Tours, a Gallo-Roman historian, in 590AD.

Lake lugano is smaller than Como or Maggiore and has an unusual shape long and narrow with a twisting shoreline. 36km in length but rarely 2km at some of its widest parts. The border of Switzerland sweeps down into Northern Italy at this junction which means that the western shoreline, and 63% of the lake, sits in Switzerland while the Eastern edge, 37%, is Italian. This gives it an interesting cultural mix and a Swiss Mediterranean vibe.

Choose your holiday location from a variety of pretty towns and villages dotted around the lake shores and explore the region by land or by water. With hiking and cruises available you can get around the lakes and make the most of your vacation.

You don't have to be a Hollywood superstar to life the life of one and enjoy the same pleasures.
